About the Actor

Anthony Wong Chau-Sang was born to a British father and a Chinese mother. He never knew his father, since the man left his family when Wong was four years old. He trained acting at ATV and later enrolled into the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. After working in several TV Series, he shot to stardom with hits such as "Hard-Boiled" and his Golden Horse-winning performance in the horrific "The Untold Story." He later appeared in the "Young and Dangerous" films as Dai Fei, a friend to Ekin Cheng''s Ho Nam. In 1995, he made his directorial debut with New Tenant. He won his second Hong Kong Film Award for his role as the corrupt police officer Tung in the critically acclaimed "Beast Cops" (1998). Wong continued his success in supporting roles in films such as "Infernal Affairs" (2002) and "Initial D" (2005).

Dubbed in dialogue that is not nearly as good in acting or in fight scenes as IP Man 1, 2, and 3.

The movie is ok to me but is a failure to extend IP Man 1,2, and 3. The fight scenes are not nearly as good and the acting is rather bad because it is filmed in Chinese dialogue with English dialogue dubbed in. I have some kung fu movies with dubbed in dialogue like some with Bruce Lee and they are much easier to follow and understand. In this movie the subtitles do not follow the spoken dubbed in dialogue and often goes into impromptu near equivalent translations that only match the subtitles in meaning. Often the spoken dialogue comes in reverse order form the way it is printed in the subtitles.

I am very disappointed in the movie as it is not that good either. The story line is more like old stereotypical Chinese movie drama. The morals of good over evil lasts forever in traditional fashion of other films.

I like to see the Kung Fu action movies and this movie is not that good for fight scenes. Most of the action is in slow motion like most are so it is slow enough for the western eye to follow the action. Also, some of the Wing Chun is good watching but the good scenes are too few and too long in between.

I appreciate the movie being made to honor IP man but it did not honor him nearly as well as the Donnie Yen version of IP man because his grace dignity and good looks are hard to match. The dialogue is too hard to follow because the lips movement are not in sync with the dubbed in English spoken dialogue.

Inspired by the Ip Man films featuring Donnie Yen this one came out in 2013 and had Anthony Wong in the lead. The story is about an older Man who comes to Hong Kong with nothing and builds up his school and his name once again. The theme is about social justice more than Kung Fu as Man’s students struggle through 1940s-60s Hong King.

I like Wong for the part. He has the right look and demeanor, plus he kicks butt. His main role is actually to dispense wisdom to his students. They represent the theme. The man who helped Ip Man set up the school and another student are both union leaders. A female apprentice also had a romantic belief in standing up for what was right based upon the books she read. A fourth member was a policeman. There are strikes, gangsters and more.

All together this might be better than then the Yen films as a result because it’s not just a martial arts flick.

This movie is more of a presentation of characters and their trials in life. It is about 60 percent Aesop''s Fables with moral lessons (Chinese version) and 40 percent Kung Fu fight movie. It is pretty well done, with good visual presentation and sets, the acting is decent, but there is a decided lack of tension. I certainly felt more civilized watching this than the average Kung Fu revenge-theme presentation, so perhaps there is a plus there somewhere--but other than the ending scenes, it felt kind of like a slice of an ordinary person''s life (who just happened to be extraordinary). I don''t like too much, over the top violence as a rule either, but to me a movie is a way to step out of the ordinary experience, go on the wild side to some degree without worrying about getting arrested for the adventure. For a big fan of Joy Luck Club or Steel Magnolias, this movie probably has too much violence. For someone who wants Enter the Dragon, or even the earlier IP Man movies, it is probably too slow.

I think this is my favorite of all the Ip Man movies. Not that I didn''t love Ip Man and Ip Man 2. I just think this one was a better grounding of how things were evolving in China and Hong Kong at the time. It could have been cheesy, and two dimensional. But it wasn''t. The story brought several different nuances to Ip Man, giving him flaws and correctly identifying that it takes a certain kind of charter to reach that level, and they are not always the kind of people you would like to be married to. I especially liked the way the sacred cow of Bruce Lee was knocked off the pedestal a bit (long overdue, IMHO). The cinematography perfectly matched the mood of the movie, and the fight scenes were somewhat more credible (although, this is still a Hong Kong kung fu flick). For kung fu practitioners and people who are looking for a kung fu movie with a bit more charter depth, this is a great movie.

I like the effort to be authentic in portrayal of Ip Man - the human side of an imperfect man who achieved great fame.
Most of the negative comments about this show seems to come from young viewers gung ho for more action - who have little understanding of the challenges of growing old - whether as a martial artiste or as an ordinary man. His struggle with making a living, pursuing his passion in Wing Chun, loss of his wife and catch up relationship with his son, his paramour''s rejection by his disciples all make for an interesting tapestry on human existence. I will be interested to know if his unbelievable escapade in the HK boon docks is historical or just artistic license - or if his intimate relationship with the singer really began after his wife''s death to preserve his honor. The strained relationship with Bruce Lee also makes an enigmatic statement. Is this film an attempt to clean up Ip Man''s image and contribution to WC? I wish it is easy to know. But overall very informative and captivating!

Overall I liked this movie. It was more about Ip Man the person than a fight movie, which makes it stand out from the other films on this subject. It gives athe viewer a glimpse into the person rather than the fighter. We are greater than the sum of our parts, and that''s the approach taken here. There is some action for those expecting it, and it''s done nicely, though it should be pointed out to those expecting a fight movie, this isn''t one. Rather it''s a film that tries to flesh out a person whose becoming both legend and myth. Worth watching to those interested in IpMan.

As much a soliloquy on ageing and friendship and dignity as a martial arts movie. I found it very moving as a warm portrait of a great man. Anthony Wong gives a fine performance and I''m sorry that many reviewers have missed the point. If you want an old man kicks ass film don''t buy it although that said there are some good set fight sequences. The Final Fight isn''t one anyone can win so if you''re in denial about old age and death and think if your heroes martial skills are good enough that makes them mortal then you''ll probably find this film disappointing. There are some sad moments but there is a lot of wry humour like the section where a newly successful Bruce Lee fails to impress the old man

Just to re-iterate the warnings; this DVD comes in either Cantonese or German languages. There are no English subtitles. Luckily my German is passable, so I had little problem following the dialogue. This is a very thoughtful Kung Fu movie, or perhaps, as other reviews have suggested, more of a drama, and if you''re looking for something action or testosterone-ridden, then this is not the movie for you. The movie follows the later life of Wing Chun master, Ip Man, and the story line is varied, and examines the various personal and emotional threads that made up his life, including the joining of his son, Ip Chun, with him in Hong Kong, much of which is a fairly accurate portrayal of his life. I particularly enjoyed the cameo appearance made by the real-life Ip Chun as the shop owner, calling Ip Man to the telephone, to receive sad news. A thoughtful, and in many ways, sympathetic portrayal of a great man, who opened up to the world, the superb fighting art of Wing Chun.
